ROBOTICS / TEAM PROJECT

Engineering below the surface.

As part of Torpedo Robotics, I worked on the surface control unit and co-pilot software for a remotely operated underwater vehicle between August 2016 and February 2019.

The context

Operating an underwater robot requires a dependable connection between the pilot and the vehicle, with controls and telemetry that make sense during a mission.

What I worked on

  • Built the surface control system, interfacing a USB joystick and an LCD for pilot status.
  • Measured the current and voltage supplied to the ROV.
  • Created a C# co-pilot GUI for cameras, sensors, alternative joystick control, and underwater image processing.
  • Used RS232 to communicate between the ROV and the surface control unit.

The bigger picture

The team placed second regionally and qualified for the international competition in Long Beach, California, where it placed 11th among 35 teams.
